Top 5 Viewpoints

My second top 5 is to list the best views I have found on my travels. This a really toughie because I have seen some spectacular places; and worked bloody hard to get to them too!

1. Tiger Leaping Gorge, China
Without a doubt the view from the top of the 28-bends was my favourite. Blue skies, snow capped mountains, and a giant gorge going all the way down to a fierce torrent of water at the bottom. When the stars came out I have never seen them so bright and I lay for hours watching satellites and shooting stars.

2. Halong Bay, Vietnam
Amazing limestone karst rock formations shot out of the sea all around us as the sun set in the distance, illuminating the rocks behind and changing those in front to jagged and giant silhouettes.

3. Lake Baikal, Russia
A short walk one very cold morning took us to an observation tower perched on the side of a hill. The lookout point over the gigantic frozen lake was just stunning.

4. Mt Batur, Indonesia
A night time trek in Bali took us to the top of an active volcano - Gunung Batur. We got to the top with the aid of a guide and torch light. It was still dark at the top and we waited until the sun came up, which was also when a horde of monkeys harrased us for food!

5. The Great Wall of China, China
Instead of following the crowd we found a quiter place to view the wall. This part of the wall hadn't been restored which made the view all the more stunning. The area had a newly installed dam which meant that some of the wall sloped down the hill and under water!
